Tuesday, July 14 - Creative Circus Open House and TypeCon Kick-Off Event
Tour the mind-blowing Creative Circus campus, drink in its color atmosphere, have a bite to eat, and get an early start on networking at one of the country's coolest design schools. Bring a pencil and something to write on, and behold the wonder of Ron Moore's dynamic presentation on how to draw stunning historical script lettering. This intimate prelude to a week of alphabetic stimulation is sponsored by Creative Circus.
Wednesday, July 15 - "Typeface" Film Premiere and Discussion
Join us at the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead for the premiere of Kartemquin Films' just-completed documentary about the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum. A panel discussion with luminaries follows: "Typeface" director Justine Nagan; James Moran, Printer/Archivist at the Hamilton; educator David Shields, an expert in the wood type collection housed at UT Austin; Nick Sherman of MyFonts, a graphic designer specializing in experimental letterpress techniques; amd type designer, historian, and sign painter John Downer, designer of several popular Emigre typefaces evoking the feel of wood type. This gala event is co-sponsored by SOTA and AIGA Atlanta.
Thursday, July 16, 2009 - Opening Night Extravaganza Hatch Shows Off
TypeCon2009 proper kicks off with a festive evening with Jim Sherraden of Hatch Show Print. Hatch is a one-of-a-kind, extraordinary letterpress poster and design shop located in Nashville. Founded in 1879, Hatch is still printing and designing over 600 jobs a year, using the original wood type found on countless posters advertising carnivals, circuses, and vaudeville and minstrel shows. Jim's enlightening and entertaining presentation will feature more than 100 years of hand-set graphic design.
Saturday, July 18, 2009 - All Fired Up!
Get ready to get spicy at the biggest typographic social event of the year. There'll be plenty of food, drink, music, dancing, chatter, and the famous Type Quiz with quizmaster extraordinaire Allan Haley. Fabulous prizes will be available to type geeks with sharp minds and those who show off the very finest in dance moves. Groove to the sounds of two fabulous designers with mad DJ skills - Frederico Antunes (Chiba Chiba) is flying in from Brazil and Mike Cina (You Work For Them) is jetting in from Minneapolis just to entertain TypeCon2009 attendees. Sunday, July 19, 2009 - Closing Night Gathering at the Center for Design Study
The ultimate wind-down after a week of extreme typographic indulgence... We’ll take a little trip to a unique Atlanta creative space, the Center for Design Study. Food, drink, and impromptu letterish demos and other activities will be part of the scene at the Center's gorgeous indoor space and cozy back patio. TypeCon makes its first foray into the Deep South, and it's going to be the hottest design event of the season! We're working on a week-long community-wide celebration of type and design. Atlanta is known for its thriving design, publishing, broadcast, and high-tech sectors, its rich historic traditions, its world-class cultural organizations, myriad design and technology education programs, and some of the finest restaurants and entertainment venues in North America.
This year's conference is going to be even better than ever. TypeCon2009 Restaurant Guide Getting to TypeCon From the AirportSunday, July 12 9:05 am by tamyeThere are several different ways to get to the conference hotel, the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead, from the airport.
MARTA
If you have only a small amount of luggage, taking the train (MARTA) is super inexpensive and speedy. Travelers can board the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train within the airport. Train fare is $1.75. Service runs from 5-1:30am on weekdays and 5:30-1:00am on weekends. Trains depart every four to five minutes weekdays and every 10-15 minutes on weekends. Grand Hyatt Atlanta guests should board the Northbound train (N to North Springs). Exit at the Buckhead Station N7 onto Peachtree Road S. The hotel is one block away - an easy walk. Upon arrival at the Buckhead Station N7, Hyatt guests may opt to call 404-237-1234 to request pick-up from the hotel's courtesy car.

SHUTTLE
The Atlanta Link is the exclusive shuttle service running to and from the airport. Rates to Buckhead are $20.50 one way or $37 roundtrip. Service operates from 6 am-12 midnight. For more information or reservations, call 404-524-3400 or visit http://www.theatlantalink.com/. After 5pm EST, call 404-392-6402 for assistance. You can book your return trip to the airport through the Hyatt concierge.
TAXI
Flat rate for one way trip from the airport to the Hyatt is $40 for the first person, and $2 for each additional passenger. The trip will usually take 35-45 minutes, but be take longer depending on traffic. Just as in any major city, be sure to get into licensed cabs only - "gypsy" cabs are a rip-off and unsafe!
OTHER OPTIONS
There are tons of rental car companies at the airport should you choose to go that route. The place you rent your car will provide you with a map and driving directions. There are also limos and other types of shuttles. This show is part of an international exhibition of type, graphic design, and special exhibits that will be on display at the conference.
Typefaces shown at TypeCon2009 will eventually become part of an online showcase at http://www.typegallery.com, and many works will travel internationally after the conference. Some works may also be selected for print publication by SOTA.
