Buffalo marks Michelle Hill’s sixth TypeCon. Last year she simultaneously served as official TypeCon Seattle volunteer wrangler, and became the Microsoft typography group’s newest employee. In the run up to TypeCon we ask her to come clean with six probing questions.
Q. How many TypeCons have you attended, which was the first one?
A. My first Typecon was in Rochester in 2001. Buffalo will be my 6th. I also attended in Minneapolis, SF, New York and Seattle
Q. Do you have a favorite TypeCon memory/story?
A. At my first Typecon Ed Benguiat wouldn’t sign my can of Goya beans because he only designed the type, not the packaging. He was really nice about it and said he would sign anything else.
Q. As I recall you had just started a new job the week of TypeCon Seattle, how is that working out?
A. Pretty good :-)
Q. What's the best thing and the worst thing about attending TypeCon in your home town?
A. Best thing: sleeping in your own bed each night. Worst thing: driving home each night.
Q. This year you're running a TypeCon workshop - what's it all about?
A. Expanding fonts to support more languages, even when the languages aren’t ones you are familiar with
Q. Any tips for first time TypeCon attendees?
A. Attend as much as you can and meet lots of people
