TypeCon2004

TypeCon2004: Type High
July 21-25, 2004
San Francisco, California USA

500 attendees took a fantastic voyage through the now and then of type, design, and all things relative. Our guides on this journey included Ed Benguiat, Roger Black, Matthew Carter, John Downer, Emory Douglas, David Lance Goines, Shelley Gruendler, Michael Harvey, House Industries, Max Kisman, Victor Moscoso, Jim Parkinson, Dan X. Solo, Erik Spiekermann, Sumner Stone, Ilene Strizver, Underware, and other fine minds.

TypeCon2004 offered a rich mix of contemporary and historical programming. More than 20 optional workshops covered everything from letterpress printing, showcard lettering, Asian calligraphy, and Renaissance handwriting to digital font production, type for mobile devices, and expert typography. Underware taught us to Shut Up and Listen, and Typophile unveiled the grace and chaos of type in motion at their first annual film festival.

The main program explored San Francisco's rock art culture of the 60s-70s, and the amazing film titles of that era; British, Dutch, Latin American, Asian, and African American type, design, and lettering; deconstructed and experimental typography; custom type; type and design education; and much more.

TypeCon2004 attendees were treated to an array of exhibits in the SOTA TypeGallery, which will travel to other venues internationally. Video highlights of the conference will be available on the web soon!
