The Society of Typographic Aficionados is pleased to announce that Seattle, Washington has been selected as the host city for TypeCon2016: Resound — August 24th to 28th.
Thanks to our friends at Civilization who were instrumental in helping bring TypeCon back to The Emerald City.
It’s so nice to see you again.
What a difference nine years can make.
Since TypeCon last descended upon the Town on the Sound back in 2007, Seattle has experienced nothing less than a creative renaissance.
Whether it’s design, business, technology, music, dance, or the visual arts — there’s an incredible amount of globally-recognized talent saturating every creative field. TypeCon thrives on cities that celebrate inspiration, collaboration, inclusiveness, and connectivity. Seattle is all that … and more.
This dynamic design community reaches far beyond city itself — from Canada’s lower mainland down past Portland. The typographically inclined have consistently proven that they aren’t afraid to travel — and this is expected to be a truly Cascadian TypeCon.
TypeCon2016 will take place at the stylish Crowne Plaza Hotel — nestled in the heart of downtown Seattle. Once again we will be offering attractively discounted room rates for TypeCon attendees. Hotel pricing and booking details will be available shortly.
Keynote Presentation by Lance Wyman
We are very excited to have renowned graphic designer Lance Wyman as our keynote speaker for TypeCon2016. For the past five decades, Wyman has help define the field of environmental graphics, specializing in identity systems for cities, events, institutions, and transportation. His work for the 1968 Mexico Olympics is widely celebrated as a pinnacle of environmental and branding design. He currently teaches corporate and wayfinding design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City.
Get involved!
The success of TypeCon relies on you and your involvement. Over the next few months, we will be actively seeking volunteers, speakers, workshop leaders, plus ideas for design-related events, tours, and exhibitions to complete the TypeCon experience. Programming submission guidelines and volunteer information will be posted as they become available.
Stay tuned.
Keep an eye on this site and Twitter for updates.

I’m stoked! And I think you should invite Robert Bringhurst to speak — he’s the first name that comes to mind when I think of typographers in Cascadia.

Hi Myrna.
We’d love to have Robert appear at TypeCon again, as he was one of our more popular speakers back in 2007. We’ll certainly remind him to submit a presentation proposal when our call for programming opens up.
By the way, is there anything TypeCon and Expedition Press can work on together? There are lots of opportunities for a small, independent press like yourself to be involved. Perhaps heading up a bookbinding workshop or selling some goods in our marketplace during the conference?
We should chat.
Cheers.

Hi all typographic fellows,
I am not sure but have you ever invited Carol Twombly to your great typographic events during all these years?
I do hope that she might give a speech at one of your coming events. This would be really something very outstanding at SOTA.
Thank you.

Hello Eyad.
Like yourself, we would love to hear Ms Twombly’s speak on ger time at Adobe, as well as her type design process, but she has completely distanced herself from typography and public life for quite some time.
From The Book Designer website:
I’m afraid that it just isn’t going to happen.

Dear Mr. Grant Hutchinson,
I was very depressed by your comments concerning Ms. Carol Twombly, the innovative typographer and the creator of ‘Trajan’ and ‘Myriad’ Typefaces, and about her early and impressive retirement. For me, this issue would be a great lose in the whole art of typography.
I also would like to recommend that you might invite another distinguished typographer from the US. He is Tobias Frere-Jones and his notable typefaces such as ‘High Tower’ and ‘Pietro’ always attract my attention. His speech about his career could give a positive addition to your accumulated achievements in typography field.
Thank you again.

I agree that Tobias would be a wonderful choice, because he was our keynote speaker at TypeCon2014 in Washington DC. It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to invite him back as a keynote so soon, however he is certainly welcome to submit a presentation proposal for our main conference program this year.
