TypeCon Community Code of Conduct

Effective August 12th, 2018

Everyone participating in TypeCon — including, but not limited to the conference, workshops, related events, and Slack channel — is required to agree to the following code of conduct. The includes all attendees, speakers, sponsors, partners, press, vendors, organizers, volunteers, and staff.The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) will enforce this code before, during, and after the conference, workshops, and related events. We expect cooperation from everyone to ensure a safe, diverse, and welcoming environment.

The Condensed Version

SOTA is dedicated to providing a harassment-free TypeCon experience for everyone, regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, or religion (or lack thereof). We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form. Sexist, racist, discriminatory, or harassing language and imagery is not welcome at TypeCon. Participants violating these rules will be expelled from the conference without a refund, and will be barred from all future events, at the discretion of the conference organizers.

The Less Condensed Version

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disabilities, physical appearance, race, and religion. Harassment also includes display of sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.Exception: Discussion or images related to sex, pornography, discriminatory language, or similar is allowed if it meets all of the following criteria:

  • It is necessary to the topic of discussion and no alternative exists.

  • It is presented in a respectful manner.

  • Attendees are respectfully given ample warning and opportunity to leave beforehand.

This exception specifically does not allow use of gratuitous sexual images as attention-getting devices.

Consequences

Participants who are asked to stop any behavior deemed as harassment are required to comply immediately.If a participant engages in any of the aforementioned behavior, TypeCon organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, from warning the offender to immediately expelling the offender without a refund.

Reporting & Enforcement

If you are being harassed, witness someone else being harassed, or have other concerns, please contact one of the TypeCon organizers or a member of venue security immediately. TypeCon organizers can be identified by their conference badges and can assist in reporting and addressing any incidences that may occur. TypeCon organizers also can help contact local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those that may experience harassment. If you cannot or do not wish to speak to a TypeCon organizer in person, or prefer to speak privately, contact us via email. support [at] typesociety [dot] org. All reports will be handled in the strictest confidence.
